Aussie and The Scotsman
15 + years of friendship has culminated in the birth of Aussie and the Scotsman.
You couldn’t find two more different people, from opposite sides of the world, with differing views on what is entertaining, what is serious, what is heartfelt, and what is funny.
Rohan (Melbourne, Australia) loves his romantic comedies. Rob (Glasgow, Scotland) loves his action movies.
Each week we deep dive into the chosen movie discussing themes, cast, awards, and some relevant trivia.
We don’t hold back in our opinions – sometimes we agree and often we don’t.
The Aussie and the Scotsman talk movies from two different lenses, and as opposites attract you might find yourself rooting for one and questioning the other.
We hope you enjoy this as much as we love doing it.

The Deer Hunter
Saturday Sep 07, 2024
Saturday Sep 07, 2024
This week we discuss the 1978 American epic war drama film The Deer Hunter directed by Michael Cimino.
Nominated for 9 awards and winner of 5 - best picture, best director, best sound, best film editing and best supporting actor for Walken. This is a must see for all movie aficionados.
This movie is about a trio of Slavic-American steelworkers whose lives are upended after fighting in the Vietnam War.
The three soldiers are played by Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and John Savage, with John Cazale (in his final role). Meryl Streep and George Dzundza star in supporting roles.
The first half of the story takes place in a working-class town in Pittsburgh, and the second half in Vietnam.
This is a powerful film. A film that will remain with you for a long time.
The intensity of the acting draws you into the pyschological trauma these men suffer.
In the words of the Aussie; "it's an after not a during".
Persevere through the first hour and you will be rewarded in the second.
The russian roulette scenes are some of the most famous in movie history.
The ending is 'divisive' and the boys do not agree on the meaning but they try and articulate it.
This is not a film for the light hearted - and you don't have to watch this movie to listen.
It is one of the best movies of its generation.

Back to the Future
Saturday Aug 31, 2024
Saturday Aug 31, 2024
This week we review the 1985 American science fiction film Back to the Future directed by Robert Zemeckis.
Set in 1985, it follows Marty McFly (Michael J Fox), a teenager accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean built by his eccentric scientist friend Emmett "Doc" Brown (Christopher Lloyd), where he inadvertently prevents his future parents from falling in love – threatening his own existence – and is forced to reconcile them and somehow get back to the future.
This is a great family film. We can't believe it is nearly 40 years old.....are we really that old!
The Scotsman gets upset when the Aussie jumps around the timeline of the movie rather than discussing it in order -which quite frankly in a time travel movie - is ok.
The Scotsman needs to chill but he is over-excited again about this movie. Who doesn't love Michael J Fox in the 80's, 90's 2000's, 2010's and 2020's. What a film - what a start - it is hard to fault and the amount of money Michael J Fox has earned for Parkinsons Research is phenomenal - we discuss in the trivia.

What would your number 1 sequel be? And have we missed any? Let us know in the comments.

Highlander
Saturday Aug 31, 2024
Saturday Aug 31, 2024
This week we discuss the 1996 British American fantasy action adventure film Highlander starring Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown and one of the Scotsman's favourites , Sean Connery.
The film chronicles the climax of an age-old war between immortal warriors, depicted through interwoven past and present-day storylines.
It is the first film in the Highlander franchise. And if you haven't seen it....don't bother.
This short podcast is definitely worth a listen because the Scotsman shows off his Sean Connery impersonations and talks some Scottish trivia.
The Scotsman suggests that Christopher Lambert could be the worst actor ever or maybe on a par with The Rock???
And is 'Shakiko' " the Scotsman's new favourite word.....we think so. He tries to fit it in in a few podcasts.

Battle of the Baddies

Saturday Aug 24, 2024
This week we have another special with the Aussie, the Scot and the Doc.
Doctor Andrew brought in a surprise quiz for us to play.
"Battle of the Baddies "
We start with Andrew's top 16 baddies and then we play them off against each other, we vote who we think is the scariest - until - as they say in Highlander "there can be only 1"
The Aussie is a bit quiet as he doesn't know a lot of the characters nor has he seen the movies. To make it worse add he finds out That Darth Vadar is not real!
Let us know who would be your worst 'baddie' of all time? Jack Torrence, The Joker, Jaws, Darth Vadar or someone we have missed?
With thanks to Doc Andrew for bringing this in.

Platoon
Saturday Aug 24, 2024
Saturday Aug 24, 2024
This week we are reviewing the 1986 American war film Platoon written and directed by Oliver Stone.
Nominated for 8 Oscars and with 4 wins this is one of the most realistic war movies on film.
Based on Stone's experiences from the war, follows a new US Army volunteer (Sheen) serving in Vietnam while his Platoon Sergeant and his Squad Leader (Berenger and Dafoe) argue over the morality in the platoon and of the war itself.
The Scotsman is a little under the weather this week - self inflicted it seems! And while the Aussie had not seen this one - nor is it his cup of tea - he seems to have a lot to say.
This is all about human nature - right and wrong - questions about the morality of war come up and we get a little serious for a while.
Let us know what you think of the movie, we really enjoyed discussing this one.

Stand by Me with The Doc
Saturday Aug 24, 2024
Saturday Aug 24, 2024
This week we are reviewing the 1986 American coming-of-age drama film Stand by Me directed by Rob Reiner.
Based on Stephen King's 1982 novella The Body, the film is set in Oregon, in 1959, and stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell (in his film debut), as four boys who go on a hike to find the dead body of a missing boy.
This is a special podcast - we have a guest reviewer. Doctor Andrew.
This is one of the Doc's favourite movies of all time.
The Scotsman is up against it here - he didn't like this film and he makes that very clear. He had not seen it before. And watching through 50 year old eyes he was bored senseless.
Not the best way to welcome our first guest - but the Scotsman doesn't care - he fires off a number of shots.
It's the Aussie, the Scot and the very articulate Doc in this nostalgic look back at a fan favourite.

Pulp Fiction
Saturday Aug 17, 2024
Saturday Aug 17, 2024
This week we review the 1994 American independant crime film Pulp Fiction written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.
It tells four intertwining tales of crime and violence in Los Angeles, California.
The film stars John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, and Uma Thurman.
The title refers to the pulp magazines and hardboiled crime novels popular during the mid-20th century, known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue.
We are so excited about this one - particularly the Scotsman who wants to review every scene.
"Arguable one of the best cinematic pieces of all time" he says
Keep the kids away as there's a fair bit of swearing and the Aussie has a field day with his lines.
"Say what again!"
It doesn't matter if you have or have not seen it - when you watch again you will be as engaged as you were the first time.
Enjoy muthu....fu$%rs!!

Pretty Woman
Saturday Aug 17, 2024
Saturday Aug 17, 2024
This week we are reviewing the 1990 American romantic comedy film Pretty Woman directed by Garry Marshall.
The film's story centers on Hollywood escort Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) and wealthy businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere).
Vivian is hired to be Edward's escort for several business and social functions, and their relationship develops during her week-long stay with him.
If you haven't worked it out yet this is one of the Aussie's favourite movies. He loves his romantic movies and love stories.
The Scotsman - well considering The Deer Hunter, Platoon and Goodfellas feature in his top 10 favourite movies of all time - you can get a sense of how this podcast is going to go down.
The Aussie is under the microscope here. The Scotsman drills him with questions - and it gets very personal.
Would the Pretty Woman relationship have worked long term? Or was it all just about the sex.....we discuss that a lot more.
Opposites attract - and that's how we got started. Enjoy!

Deadpool & Wolverine
Saturday Aug 10, 2024
Saturday Aug 10, 2024
This week we are reviewing the 2024 American superhero comedy film Deadpool & Wolverine directed by Shawn Mendes.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman respectively star as Wade Wilson / Deadpool and Logan / Wolverine, alongside a cavalcade of star cameos.
In the film, Deadpool learns that the Time Variance Authority is set to destroy his universe and partners with a reluctant Wolverine from another universe to stop them.
The plot is paper thin but we are not watching for the plot. We are watching for the Reynolds/Jackman combo.
Their chemistry is off the charts, the in-jokes hilarious and the 4th wall conversations have just the right amount of charm.
This is not our usual kind of film - the Scotsman refers back to their business contract clause which states "we should only be reviewing old classic, nostalgic movies" - not current superhero movies. As you can see he loses that battle.
We argue over Hugh Jackman (55) and ex-wife Deborah Furness (68) age for some reason and we discuss the gibes the various characters have at their respective studios.
Despite hamming it up in the socials these two have been friends for years. This is the best superhero movie since End Game.
Definitely worth watching at the movies before you listen - if you don't want us to spoil it for you.
