Aussie and The Scotsman
15 + years of friendship has culminated in the birth of Aussie and the Scotsman.
You couldn’t find two more different people, from opposite sides of the world, with differing views on what is entertaining, what is serious, what is heartfelt, and what is funny.
Rohan (Melbourne, Australia) loves his romantic comedies. Rob (Glasgow, Scotland) loves his action movies.
Each week we deep dive into the chosen movie discussing themes, cast, awards, and some relevant trivia.
We don’t hold back in our opinions – sometimes we agree and often we don’t.
The Aussie and the Scotsman talk movies from two different lenses, and as opposites attract you might find yourself rooting for one and questioning the other.
We hope you enjoy this as much as we love doing it.

The Usual Suspects
Saturday Aug 10, 2024
Saturday Aug 10, 2024
This week we discuss the 1995 crime thriller film The Usual Suspects directed by Bryan Singer.
The plot follows the interrogation of Roger "Verbal" Kint (played by Kevin Spacey), a small-time con man, who is one of only two survivors of a massacre. Through flashback and narration, Spacey tells an interrogator a convoluted story of events including that of a mysterious crime lord—known as Keyser Söze.
MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT - Please watch this movie if you have not seen it. While it can be a little slow at times it is 100% worth watching before you listen.
It is so good that it took the Aussie 20mins to work out after the movie ended what had actually happened.
The Aussie tells us an amazing story how a very close relative read the draft script of The Usual Suspects and lived next door to the writer and director.
The Scotsman brings the caliber of the show down with a flatulence story that has to be heard to be believed.
And it gets a bit spicy later in the podcast when the Scotsman puts out a nation wide call for a 3rd co-host!!

The Karate Kid

Saturday Aug 10, 2024
This is the first - and the best - in the series of The Karate Kid movies - the original 1984 movie directed by John Avilsden (the oscar winning director of Rocky).
It stars Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, Elisabeth Shue, and William Zabka.
The Karate Kid follows the story of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), an Italian-American teenager from New Jersey who moves with his widowed mother to Los Angeles.
LaRusso is taught karate by a handyman and war veteran Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) to help LaRusso defend himself and compete in a karate tournament against his bullies.
If you are a Gen-X'r there's a high chance you will have seen it.
If you are a millienial you may have seen the sequels on Netflix - Cobra Kai - or the remake with Jackie Chan, either way, you don't need to watch this one to listen - it's a nostalgic look back at an 80's classic.
We review the original and discuss all the sequels.
Tune in for some fun.........we absolutely fan boy over this one.

The film follows the life of an Alabama man named Forrest Gump (Hanks) and his experiences in the 20th-century United States. It also stars Robin Wright as love interest Jenny.
The Scotsman is still in shock about the Aussie's thoughts on this movie. All the Aussie wants is a love story - he doesn't need these 'silly bits ' in between.
Please have a listen and tell us what you think. Are you with the Aussie or the Scotsman?
"I love you Jeeeaaannnyyy."

Tuesday Jul 30, 2024
Today we review the 2022 oscar winning coming-of-age comedy-drama film CODA written and directed by Sian Heder.
It stars Emilia Jones as Ruby Rossi, the child of deaf adults (CODA) and only hearing member of her family, who attempts to help her family's struggling fishing business while pursuing her aspirations to become a singer.
This podcast does not start well. The boys are arguing like an old married couple.
The Aussie is on fire here. He tears The Scotsman a new one for using the word 'lovely' over and over again.
Despite nearly coming to blows in this podcast there are lots of laughs.
Winner of Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.
This is a must watch and listen.

Today we review the 1999 American psychological thriller film The Sixth Sense directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
It stars Bruce Willis as a child psychologist whose patient (Haley Joel Osment) claims he can see and talk to the dead.
The Scotsman is triggered - it reminds him of the time he was locked in a cupboard as a child.
The Aussie - well let's just say he was a bit disappointed in this movie.
We break down all the - now obvious - clues in the movie.
If you have not seen this before - we can't stress enough, please stop what you are doing - watch the movie before listening.
And don't read anything more about it.
Haley Joel Osmont gives the performance of a lifetime - he was outstanding.

Wednesday Jul 24, 2024
Today we are reviewing the 1996 American sports comedy-drama film Jerry Maguire starring Tom Cruise as the sports agent Jerry Maguire, alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. and Renée Zellweger.
Spawning several catchphrases into popular culture, such as "Show me the money!" ; "You had me at 'Hello'"; "You complete me" and "Help me help you" this is one of the Aussie's favourites.
We know the Aussie loves sport, business and love stories so this is right up his alley.
The Scotsman is disappointed in the movie and goes a flat midway through the podcast - but the enthusiasm of the Aussie's "Show me the moonnneeeyyyyy!!!!" brings him back to life.
Words of wisdom from the Scotsman; "You're a true romantic and i'm more a platoon guy" that about sums the boys up in this one
(podcast fact check: Bradley Cooper is in Avengers End Game - he voices Rocket Racoon from Gardians of the Galaxy - we discuss this in the trivia section)

A Few Good Men

Tuesday Jul 23, 2024
Today we are reviewing the 1992 American legal drama film A Few Good Men written by Aaron Sorkin, directed by Rob Reiner, and starring an ensemble case including Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Morre, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Pollak, J T Walsh, Cuba Gooding Jnr and Kiefer Sutherland.
The plot follows the court-martial of two U.S. Marines charged with the murder of a fellow Marine and the tribulations of their lawyers as they prepare a case.
The Aussie wonders why Demi Moore is in this movie, "no pizzazz" he says! We haven't heard the word "pizzazz" since 1984. The Scotsman disagrees.
There are so many great scenes and so many great lines in this. The Aussie tells us a story from his time as a kid. He received his own 'code red'.
How good is the final courtroom scene? Would you sacrifice one human for the lives of many? Tough choice we discuss.
Did someone say Code Red?
Nominated for 4 Acadamy Awards this is one of the best movies of the 1990's.

Winner of best movie and best actor for Crow and guess what the Aussie does not like it! He doesn't rate this at all.
Can you believe it. Don't tell Russell!
The boys discuss what makes an epic movie and why it's worthy of the Oscar.
The Scotsman does his best to convince him why it is worthy and despite recently being at the Colosseum in Rome the Aussie is not impressed - you have to hear his opinion.
A must listen and it is a precursor to the upcoming Gladiator 2.
