Aussie and The Scotsman
15 + years of friendship has culminated in the birth of Aussie and the Scotsman.
You couldn’t find two more different people, from opposite sides of the world, with differing views on what is entertaining, what is serious, what is heartfelt, and what is funny.
Rohan (Melbourne, Australia) loves his romantic comedies. Rob (Glasgow, Scotland) loves his action movies.
Each week we deep dive into the chosen movie discussing themes, cast, awards, and some relevant trivia.
We don’t hold back in our opinions – sometimes we agree and often we don’t.
The Aussie and the Scotsman talk movies from two different lenses, and as opposites attract you might find yourself rooting for one and questioning the other.
We hope you enjoy this as much as we love doing it.

Titanic with Emma
Saturday Nov 02, 2024
Saturday Nov 02, 2024
This week we review the 1997 American epic romantic disaster film directed and written by James Cameron.
It is based on the account of the sinking of RMS Titanic in 1912 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as members of different social classes who fall in love during the ship's maiden voyage.
Finally, some class comes to the podcast with our friend Emma joining us to help us review this incredible movie.
We dive deep into the heart of the Titanic exploring all the themes, details, relationships, history, and the love story .
The Aussie uses the word 'divine' 625 times and calls The Scotsman a "gorilla "
Emma keeps the boys in check for the most part.....but the Scotsman is crass and as always tries to appear smarter than he actually is. He doesn't get away with it in this podcast.
The steamy car scene gets a lot of discussion.......and the mention of The Poseidon Adventure and Ernest Borgnine gets blank looks from the Aussie and Emma. Seriously.....who hasn't seen The Poseidon Adventure!
Strap yourself in, grab a lifejack and make sure there's enough space on the lifeboats because we are going down in a blaze of glory.
Thanks Emma - you are welcome anytime!
Enjoy.

Fences
Saturday Nov 02, 2024
Saturday Nov 02, 2024
This week we review the 2016 American period drama film Fences directed by Denzel Washington.
It stars Washington and Viola Davis (who won best supporting actress) in the main roles.
It follows a working-class African-American father who tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life.
If you love good quality movies - with powerful acting performances - you will really enjoy this.
Definitely a must watch before listen as we don't want to spoil it for you.
This is one of our early podcasts - quick and to the point.
While the Aussie struggled with the first 30mins explaining: "Denzel was angry and dismissive.....half senile, semi drunk, a ranter and raver" . The Scotsman tries to explain that this is his role. And not liking him means he did a great job.
Viola gives the speech of the century.....and wins her Oscar. Denzel lays it on thick with some intense monologues.
Emotional, powerful, intense and passionate this movie is worthy of all its accolades.
For movie aficionados and lovers of great acting.

Prisoners

Saturday Oct 26, 2024
This week we review the 2013 American thriller film Prisoners directed by Denis Villeneuve.
The movie stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhall, Viola Davis, Paul Dano and Terrence Howard.
It's a simple premise. You child is kidnapped. What would you do to get them back?
This is a vigorous podcast. The boys are feisty. Tensions are at an all time high.
We are recording in a new location for a week - maybe the noisiest place on earth!
This is not just another kidnapping movie - and please - it is a must watch before we spoil it for you.
The angry Scotsman lives up to his name this week. He’s had enough of the lame limp wristed bulls%it answers the Aussie gives.
You need to make a stand here. What would you do? Please tell us

Million Dollar Baby
Saturday Oct 26, 2024
Saturday Oct 26, 2024
This week we review the 2004 American sports drama film Million Dollar Baby directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.
Winner of 4 Oscars - best picture, best director, best actress (Hilary Swank) and best supporting actor (for Morgan Freeman), the film follows Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald (Swank), an underdog amateur boxer who is helped by a grumpy cantankerous boxing trainer (Eastwood) to achieve her dream of becoming a professional boxer.
But it is way more than this - and again - spoiler alert if you have not seen it.
This has an incredible twist. The first half might be about boxing - the second half is not.
You do not have to be into boxing or sports to enjoy this movie or podcast.
We discuss some important themes based on the twist and the Aussie gets fed up with the grumpy Scotsman's long-winded intro and compares him to grumpy Clint.
Serious themes. Serious podcast. With a fair bit of energy.
Enjoy.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Saturday Oct 19, 2024
Saturday Oct 19, 2024
This week we review a 1975 American psychological drama film One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
The film stars Jack Nicholson as a new patient at a mental institution, alongside Louise Fletcher as a sadistic nurse with a great supporting cast.
Winner of all 5 Academy Awards it was nominated for including Oscars for Nicholson and Fletcher this is an all time classic.
We do discuss how "insane" Jack was.
Is Nurse Ratchet really one of the most evil characters of all time or is she just overly controlling and intensely power-hungry?
This is a must watch before listen. Otherwise we spoil it for you.
One of the best movies of all time.

Richard Jewell
Saturday Oct 19, 2024
Saturday Oct 19, 2024
This week we review the 2019 American biographical film Richard Jewell directed by Clint Eastwood.
We promise you - this is the movie you didn't know you had to see.
If you have time try and watch before you listen to this podcast.
It is one of our favourite movies and reviews of all time - an incredible injustice story.
It had us angry, it has us sad, it brought the tough emotionless Scotsman to tears at the end........and it's not because the Aussie tells him he has "chicken legs" early on in the podcast!
We delve into this one and discuss real life situations, injustices and question how we would act and react in Richard's position.
This is a true story - and don't let the name of the movie fool you - this is one of our favourite movies we have reviewed to date.
The podcast drops on Saturday - to find it search for Aussie and the Scotsman wherever you get your podcasts from.

The Wolf of Wall Street
Sunday Oct 13, 2024
Sunday Oct 13, 2024
This week we discuss the 2013 American biographical black comedy film The Wolf of Wall Street directed by Martin Scorsese.
The story is based on Jordan Belfort's 2007 memoir of the same name. It recounts Belfort's career as a stockbroker in New York City and how his firm, Stratton Oakmont, engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street, leading to his downfall.
The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort, Jonah Hill as his business partner and friend, Donnie Azoff, Margot Robbie as his second wife, Naomi and Kyle Chandler as FBI agent Patrick Denham.
Unsurprisingly this is one of the boys favourite movies - they discuss their favourite scenes and the Scotsman asks the Aussie to sell him a pen.
Does the movie gloss over or exaggerate Belforts abuse towards women? We talk a little about this and the disparity and the chauvinistic way in which women were treated by men in corporate 80's life.
And then out of the blue we received a visitor in the studio - the Scotsman's wife enters and helps out.
Do you have a favourite scene....the Aussie love the goldfish swallowing.. "ON NEW ISSUE DAY!" or the house party or when the qualudes kick in scene.....

It is the first live-action Barbie film and it stars Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film follows them on a journey of self-discovery through Barbieland and the real world following an existential crisis.
It is also a commentary regarding patriarchy and the effects of feminism and there is a whose who of supporting actors.

We struggle through in our own way and would love to hear your thoughts.

Marriage Story
Saturday Oct 12, 2024
Saturday Oct 12, 2024
This week we review the 2019 American drama film Marriage Story written and directed by Noah Baumbach.
It stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver as a couple going through a bi-coastal divorce complicated by custody issues surrounding their son.
Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Julie Hagerty, and Merritt Wever appear in supporting roles.
Neither boys had seen this one.
The Scotsman has been avoiding it like the plague. He doesnt like "girly movies" not "his cup of tea".
The Aussie poses an interesting question, "in a marriage what can you come back from? He has 4 possibilities.......
The Aussie is dishing out some sensible advice here - and this one, although he's not a massive fan suits his EQ.
