Aussie and The Scotsman
15 + years of friendship has culminated in the birth of Aussie and the Scotsman.
You couldn’t find two more different people, from opposite sides of the world, with differing views on what is entertaining, what is serious, what is heartfelt, and what is funny.
Rohan (Melbourne, Australia) loves his romantic comedies. Rob (Glasgow, Scotland) loves his action movies.
Each week we deep dive into the chosen movie discussing themes, cast, awards, and some relevant trivia.
We don’t hold back in our opinions – sometimes we agree and often we don’t.
The Aussie and the Scotsman talk movies from two different lenses, and as opposites attract you might find yourself rooting for one and questioning the other.
We hope you enjoy this as much as we love doing it.

American Beauty

Thursday Jul 11, 2024
This week we discuss the 1999 American black comedy drama film American Beauty directed by Sam Mendes in his directorial debut.
Winner of 5 oscars this movie stars Kevin Spacey as Lester Burnham, an advertising executive who has a midlife crisis when he becomes infatuated with his teenage daughter's best friend, played by Mena Suvari.
Annette Bening stars as Lester's materialistic wife, Carolyn, and Thora Birch plays their insecure daughter, Jane.
Wes Bentley, Chris Cooper, and Allison Janney co-star.
This is an interesting movie, subject matter and podcast debate in light of Kevin Spacey's sexual misconduct accusations and subsequent not guilty verdict.
But is he still guilty in the court of public opinion? The Aussie thinks so.
We discuss mid life crisis - not giving a f^&k and letting loose.
We have a big debate about Annette Benning and her OCD or not OCD - would you in the height of passion tell someone their beer is about to spill and ruin the moment?
And the Aussie gives maybe the worst and most incoherent wrap we have ever heard!
Check this one it's a classic even if we do say so ourselves.

This week we discuss the 1997 American romantic comedy drama film As Good as It Gets.
It stars Jack Nicholson in his oscar winning role as a misanthropic, bigoted and obsessive–compulsive novelist, Helen Hunt in her oscar winning role as a single mother with a chronically ill son, and Greg Kinnear in his Golden Globe winning role as a gay artist.
Needless to say the Aussie is madly in love with this movie. It makes him want to be a better man.
It is hard not to love this feel good, brilliantly acted oscar worthy movie.
The boys reel off line after line. Written by James L Brooks and Mark Andrus this is a brilliant, loveable, endearing and entertaining movie.
It's a must watch if you haven't already.

The Shawshank Redemption

Thursday Jul 11, 2024
This week we discuss the 1994 American prison drama The Shawshank Redemption starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
The film tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne (Robbins), who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murders of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence.
Over the following two decades, he befriends a fellow prisoner, Ellis "Red" Redding played by Morgan Freeman, and becomes instrumental in a money laundering operation led by the prison warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton).
This is in the Aussie's top 3 movies of all time - what a call that is.
The Scotsman believe it or not was bored when he watched it this time around.
The Aussie tells him he is "full of shit". Listen to how disappointed the Aussie is with his Scottish counterpart.
Is he being 'obtuse'?

Goodfellas

Thursday Jul 11, 2024
This week we discuss the 1990 American biographical crime drama film Goodfellas directed by Martin Scorsese.
It stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino.
The film narrates the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980.
This is one of the Scotsman's favourite and the Aussie - believe it or not - had not seen this one! Worse still - he did not enjoy it.
He did enjoy Joe Pesci's performance at least and the Scotsman, not happy, questions his movie reviewing skills.
Is this movie comparable to The Godfather? Or could Goodfellas be better? The Scotsman poses that question.

Thursday Jul 11, 2024
This week we discuss the 2018 American musical romantic drama A Star is Born directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliot.
You will be surprised by both Rob and Rohans reaction to this one - one of the few movies Rob had not seen and there is a good reason for it. He hates this!!
It's fair to say the Aussie loved this one. He goes a bit gaga over Lady Gaga and dribbles over Cooper.
It's a fast paced podcast that's never shallow!

Is this Bruce Willis's best film? We think so.
Is it a Christmas movie? We discuss.
"I loved it as a boy and I love it as a man" just one of the profound statements from the Aussie in this week's review of an all time classic.
Did you know Bruce was 85th choice (approximiately) to be cast in this role?
The Scotsman lets us know in the trivia section.
Sit back and enjoy.

There's no messing around in this podcast. No hello. No story. They just get straight into it.
This is one of the only films the Aussie had seen and one of the few the Scotsman had not seen.
The boys get deep and meaningful as they discuss the themes of this movie.
Rob dissects his own parenting skills and Rohan gets on a chair.
They talk about social pressures and the difficulties of being a kid.

Thursday Jul 11, 2024
This week we discuss the 1976 American sports drama film Rocky written by and starring Sylvester Stallone.
It is the first installment in the Rocky franchise and also stars Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, and Burgess Meredith.
In the film, Rocky Balboa (Stallone), a poor small-time club fighter gets an unlikely shot at the world heavyweight championship held by Apollo Creed (Weathers).
It is the first installment in the Rocky franchise.
It is fair to say this is an all time favourite. The boys can't get enough of this movie - but it gets serious when the Scotsman suggests that this is a love story.
What do you think? Is this a love story or a boxing movie? Rohan thinks it's a boxing movie. Rob thinks it's a love story.
Rob gets wripped apart in this one and the boys nearly come to blows. Has Rob mixed up his Rocky movies?
This is a rare five out of five from both the Aussie and the Scotsman.

Thursday Jul 11, 2024
This week we discuss the 1991 American psychological horror thriller film The Silence of The Lambs starring Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee who is hunting a serial killer named "Buffalo Bill" who skins his female victims.
To catch him, she seeks the advice of the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer.
With 7 oscar nominations and 5 wins it is surprising - yet unsurprising - when you hear that the Aussie had not seen this one.
Lots of amazing scenes to dissect - no pun intended!
It's a powerful, engaging, thrilling movie and even 30 years later it still holds its own.
If you haven't seen it - watch first before listening, with a nice chianti.....if you dare!!
We have some interesting trivia in this one too.

Charlie is left with only his father's beloved vintage car and rosebushes.
Both the Aussie and the Scotsman are fanboying over this movie. This is one of their favourites.
Lots of incredible scenes to choose from. Which is your favourite? The bath scene? The smoke alarm scene? The dropped matches? The casino scenes? Something else?
