This week we review the 1981 sports war film Escape to Victory directed by John Huston and starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Max von Sydow and Pelé.
The film is about Allied prisoners of war who are interned in a German prison camp during the Second World War who play an exhibition match of football against a German team.
The film received great attention upon its release, as it starred professional footballers Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles, Kazimierz Deyna, Paul Van Himst, Mike Summerbee, Hallvar Thoresen, Werner Roth and Pelé.
We thought we found Utopia! War movie combined with sport.....but alas not to be. The Aussie absolutely hates this movie - his worst to date!
"unwatchable, slow, cringe, dated, not funny, not serious, worst film I have ever seen!!!!" he proclaims
The Scotsman reviews it like a warm blanket. The feeling an old movie has on you.
Was Sly miscast? We are unanimous in that answer.
